Two Students Honored by the Mayor

Juan Arbelaez and Shanice Owens are well on their way to having distinquished college careers. Recently the two Stamford residents were recognized by Mayor Michael Pavia for their achievements. Each is receiving a scholarship administered by Person-to-Person.

Arbelaez is the recipient of the Napolitano Family Scholarship. He attends the University of Connecticut, where he's majoring in finance. He maintains a 4.0 GPA, is on the Dean's List and holds membership in the Tau Sigma National Honor Society. He transferred to UConn this year from Norwalk Community College, where he also maintained a 4.0 GPA. Arbelaez has been a business intern at the Yerwood Center, and a program intern at Stamford Partnership. Practical experience he's gained also includes working as an accounting assistant at the Jay Star Group in Norwalk. Extracurricular activities include membership in the UConn Student Government Association.

Owens was awarded the Lockhart Family Charitable Trust Scholarship for Academic Excellence. She is a senior at Quinnipiac University, where she is studying sociology and elementary education. She is a 2007 graduate of Westhill High School, where she earned a 3.8 GPA. At Quinnipiac, Owens maintains a 3.7 GPA. She currently is enrolled in the graduate teaching program and is looking to continue her studies after graduation by pursuing a master's degree in elementary education. Owens works at the Chester Addison Community Center. She also participates in the Quinnipiac Admissions Office work/study program and is involved in the Black Student Union, Community Action Project, Habitat for Humanity and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

Person-to-Person is a nonprofit agency based in Darien. It is designed to aid low-income families and individuals through a number of programs that include emergency assistance, advocacy and scholarships.
