Tropical Storm Andrea was heading north from its Florida landfall Thursday. It was expected to decrease in power to a tropical depression before reaching the tri-state area late Friday afternoon.

In Connecticut, wind and power outages were not expected to be major factors, but the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Fairfield County until Saturday afternoon.

Gov. Dannel Malloy cautioned Connecticut residents about the storm as well.

“Hurricane season is indeed upon us, and our storm luck being what it is, residents should start to make preparations for inclement weather,” said Malloy. “The current forecast is calling for heavy rain, minor flooding, and high winds, so I want people to take common-sense precautions to secure their property and be aware of deteriorating conditions as this storm approaches.”

Flooding in low-lying areas and some rivers was possible due to heavy rains expected during the Friday afternoon rush hour. Coastal communities may experience tidal flooding. High temperatures were predicted in the mid-60s for Friday.

The heavy rain could result in flash flooding in urban and poor drainage areas, the National Weather Service said. Small streams could also experience flooding, but larger streams and rivers should remain within their banks.

A sustained wind of at least 39 mph is the benchmark for a tropical storm. Winds are predicted to gust up to only 11 mph in the storm in Connecticut.

Saturday is predicted to be wet as well, with showers likely and high temperatures in the mid-70s. Sunday should be the nicest day of the weekend, but there is still a chance of showers and a high temperature in the upper 70s, according to the National Weather Service.
