Train Slams Into Car in Stamford

UPDATE: Service has been restored on the New Canaan branch of Metro-North Railroad.

STAMFORD, Conn. – An elderly woman was injured when her car was struck by a northbound train on Metro-North's New Canaan branch Tuesday afternoon, Metropolitan Transit Authority police said. The crash occurred at the Riverbend Drive South crossing in Stamford. All service was suspended on the branch.

The driver, who was not identified, was transported to Stamford Hospital and was in stable condition after the 12:05 p.m. accident, MTA police said. Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said the elderly woman was conscious when emergency crews came to her assistance.

After the crash, the train returned to the yard for the investigators to examine, MTA police said. No injuries were reported among the 16 people on the train.

Anders said the train was due in New Canaan at about 12:14 p.m. Metro-North is running buses along the New Canaan branch while crews work on the track. Anders said she did not know when train service would be restored.

MTA police are investigating and will examine video surveillance of the crossing to determine why the car was on the tracks and whether the warning equipment was working properly. Also, they will look at the black box inside the train to see whether the conductor went through the proper precautions when something is on the tracks.
