This Weekend, Make Family Time Flavorful

Put roasting at the beach on the back burner this weekend, so you can satisfy your family's appetite for something tasty to do with one of these tempting events.

Saturday, June 18Southport's musical repast features five fife and drum corps, accompanied by the Governor's Horse Guard, who strut their stuff for the annual Street Parade before the Blessing of the Fleet. Follow them to the lower wharf, for free food and drink, as more than 50 water craft glide by for the blessing. A pre-parade pancake breakfast at Eagle Hill School at 8:30 a.m. will sustain you before the 11 a.m. parade kick off at Trinity Church on Pequot Avenue.

The Keeler Tavern Museum cooks up a delicious recipe for its Colonial Day, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Black smithing, rope making, open hearth cooking, weaving and quilting are the old-fashioned menu items. Kids' themed activities, as well as pony rides and kettle corn to munch on, add seasoning to the day's history lesson. For more information, visit the Museum's webpage.

Westport's Yankee Doodle Fair is always flavorful, for parents as well as kids. Sized just right, its rides, wicked fair food and layout aren't overfilling. An end-of-the-school year tradition, all proceeds benefit local charities chosen by the Fair's host, the Westport Woman's Club. For more information, visit the Club's website.

Saturday is a feast for antiques and collectibles shoppers, when dealers from around New England converge at Glastonbury's 38th annual Antiques Festival on the green. Early birds can swoop in at 7 a.m. to gobble up treasures while the dealers are setting up. General admission begins at 9 a.m. and winds down by 4 p.m. For more info, visit the Festival's webpage.

The Klingberg Vintage Motorcar Festival in New Britain is an overflowing smorsgasbord for car lovers, with hundreds of gleaming antique and classic cars representing seven decades. Pre-1940s antique motorcycles are also served up, and food stands and entertainment are additional courses. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Festival's website.

Sunday, June 19

Looking for a robust recipe for Father's Day? Here are some ingredients for the mix:

- Order up Open Cockpit Sunday at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks. Dad can climb into more than twelve cockpits and play pilot. For more info, visit the Museum's website.

- Connecticut Street Rod Association showcases modified antique cars on Sunday at Lake Compounce. After you've sampled the auto exhibit, tuck in to a trip on The Rev-O-Lution, the park's pulse-pounding new ride that rocks, rolls, spins a full 360 degrees, if you have the stomach for it. Then, drink in the cool pleasures of water slides and pools at the park's Splash Harbor. For information, visit the park's website.

- Taste the alfresco pleasures of a cruise to Sheffield Island Lighthouse on Father's Day. Your relationship with Dad can marinate while you indulge your senses with fresh air and the open water. For information, visit the Seaport's website.

- Naturally, your Dad rocks your world, so, why not dish out some tickets for him to The Smithereens concert at Fairfield Theatre Company on Father's Day? This boisterous band blends rock and power pop with classic songs for a mouth-watering, musical mix. For tickets and information, visit FTC's website.
