State Warns Of Big Traffic Delays On I-95 This Weekend In New Haven

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Drivers from Fairfield County and beyond can expect significant traffic jams and delays this weekend on Interstate 95 in the New Haven area, the state Department of Transportation warned. 

Traffic will be shifted onto the new I-95 southbound lanes of the Pearl Harbor Memorial (Q) Bridge. The DOT warns that the work is "expected to cause significant traffic delays the weekend of Friday, July 26, to Monday, July 29. 

For the work to be done to allow the traffic shift, the following lane closures will occur this weekend: 

  • The roadway of I-95 southbound between Woodward Avenue/Lighthouse Point at Exit 50 and Sargent Drive at Exit 46 will be reduced to a single lane from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday; from 10 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday; and from 10 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday. Two lanes will be maintained at all other times.
  • The I-91 southbound connection to I-95 southbound will be reduced to one lane between 10 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.

The following ramps will be closed: 

  • The I-95 southbound on-ramp from Woodward Avenue/Lighthouse Point at Exit 50 will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday. Motorists can detour to Forbes Avenue (Route U.S. 1) to I-95 southbound, I-91 northbound or Route 34 westbound.
  • The I-95 southbound traffic only will find the off-ramp to Sargent Drive at Exit 46 closed from 1 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Monday. Motorists can detour to Ella Grasso Boulevard at Exit 45. The off-ramp to Sargent Drive at Exit 46 will be accessible from I-91 southbound.

The following off-ramps will be open but access moved:

  • The I-95 southbound off-ramp to I-91 northbound at Exit 48 will remain open but access will be temporarily relocated approximately 1 mile north from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.
  • The I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 34 westbound at Exit 47 will remain open but access will be temporarily relocated approximately one mile north from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. There will also be intermittent 20-minute ramp closures between 1 and 5 a.m. Saturday.

The weekend work is part of a series of traffic shifts as work progresses on the Pearl Harbor Memorial (Q) Bridge, reconstruction of the I-95 / I-91 / Route 34 Interchange and other projects that are part of the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing (NHHC) Corridor Improvement Program.

If the work is canceled due to bad weather, the work will be rescheduled to the weekend of Friday, Aug. 2, to Monday, Aug. 5.
