FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The state has issued an Air Quality Alert for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday for southern Fairield County as bright sunny and 85-degree-plus temperatures continue to bake the area, the National Weather Service said.
The alert means that ozone levels within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards, says the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
The advisory warns of possible respiratory symptoms and breathing discomfort in active children and adults with respiratory diseases, such as asthma. Active children and adults, as well as people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
The community can take simple, voluntary actions to help reduce ground-level ozone and in turn help prevent an exceedance of the federal standard, DEEP said. Here are its recommendations:
Drive Less: Walk or ride a bicycle, use public transportation, combine errands or join a carpool or vanpool.
Be a Smart Driver: Drive at fuel-saving, moderate speeds, tune your car regularly, avoid idling and test vehicle emissions on time.
In the Yard: Use electric or hand-powered equipment and reduce use of garden chemicals
Around the House: Buy environmentally friendly cleaners, avoid using aerosol products and select water-based paint.

The National Weather Service is also warning of storm system moving into the Fairfield County region Wednesday and Thursday that will bring heavy showers and thunderstorms and a threat of urban and small stream flash flooding.
Rainfall could exceed more than 2 inches an hour in the storm, the weather service warns.
