State DEP: Greenwich Audubon Scat Not a Cougar's

GREENWICH, Conn. -- DNA tests show that scat found June 12 at Audubon Greenwich is from a member of the canine family, not from a mountain lion, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection announced Thursday.

“These results are another step in our efforts to determine if the mountain lion struck and killed by a car in Milford on June 11 was the same mountain lion that had been spotted earlier in Greenwich,” DEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette said in a prepared statement.

On Monday, the Greenwich Police Department received confirmation that a previous scat sample collected near the Brunswick School campus on King Street was from a mountain lion.

The DEP Environmental Conservation Police are trying to determine if the Milford lion was a pet and was brought into Connecticut illegally or wandered in from another state. The U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the University of Arizona and the New York State Museum are doing tests to determine where the animal came from.

Results from a necropsy of the mountain lion have not yet been released.
