Gov. M. Jodi Rell asked all residents and business owners who were affected by the storms this March to call 2-1-1 to report damages. Although state and local governments will receive aid, the federal government denied the states appeal for assistance for individuals last week. As part of the states appeal, the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security needs to collect new data about the damage.
We are appealing the federal governments rejection of financial assistance for individuals and businesses severely affected by last months heavy downpours, high winds and flooding, Rell said in a press release April 29. We need residents and businesses to help the state make its case.
Phone lines will be open 24 hours a day, each day until May 14. Those who call will answer 10 to 12 questions about the extent of the damage. Residents can also fill out a report online at www.211ct.org. Rell asks all with damage to their homes or businesses to call, even if they have already made a report to the state.
State Director of Emergency Management William Hackett said calls to 2-1-1 are not a formal application for aid. They will only be used to provide more information about the storms to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. If the state wins its appeal, the DEMHS will tell residents how to apply for assistance.
