STAMFORD, Conn. The Stamford woman who was brutally mauled by a chimpanzee two years ago revealed her new face Thursday morning, NBCs "Today" Show reported. In June, Charla Nash became the first person in the U.S. to undergo face and hand transplant surgery.
Im beginning to feel my jaw and chin, Nash said in the story, and I can move my mouth and smile. I still feel weak. But little by little Im getting stronger.
Before the surgery, Nash kept a veil over her face and was unable to eat or smell. Her first post-operation meal was eggs and cream cheese, and she recently told her doctors that she has regained her sense of smell, the article said.
During the 2009 attack by a friends chimpanzee, Nash lost her hands, nose, eyelids and lips. The 20-hour operation took place at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston.
Her face is a combination of her original face and that of a donor, Nashs doctor, Bodan Pomohac, said. The transplanted hands had to be removed due to complications, NBC reported back in June.
