Smooth Holiday Travels at the Westchester Airport

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - As the holidays loom, travelers throughout Westchester County Airport had little to worry about while preparing to board their flights.

County Airport Manager Steve Ferguson said even though the airport was showing bigger numbers than on a typical day, things were still running smoothly.

"We're in pretty good shape this year," Ferguson said. "We don't anticipate any hectic days this weekend, except possibly Christmas."

Though lower than last year's holiday rush, the airport's numbers were still at or near capacity, Ferguson said. He said the airport service was nearly 20 percent above average capacity Friday as opposed to close to 30 percent above average brought in last year.

Though he wasn't sure exactly why the airport saw a dip in its traveler numbers from last year, Ferguson said the rising cost of airline tickets might have been a factor.

"We're still having the normal 53 flights a day, but it's not as busy as expected," Ferguson said. "Flights are full, but we're not in crunch mode."

Average capacity, Ferguson said, means that all flights are close to three-quarters full.

With a bright forecast also on its way for the coming weekend, Ferguson said there were few things that he anticipates would get in the way of a smooth holiday weekend of travel.

"The weather looks good and we look good," he said. "We'll be in good shape."
