Updated 11:10 a.m. FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Thunderstorms expected to roll into Fairfield County late Wednesday could turn nasty, the National Weather Service says.
The Weather Service says storms should reach coastal areas between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and then move offshore.
"Some of these storms will be severe, with damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and large hail," the Weather Service says in a Special Weather Statement. "Flash flooding is also possible ... Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also expected."
The heat and humidity over the past few days has made the atmosphere unstable, the Weather Service says.
Temperatures this afternoon could hit the low- to mid-90s. It will be warm again Thursday, with highs near 90, and then turn much cooler on Friday. There also is a slight chance of showers on Thursday and Friday, the Weather Service says.
Highs over the weekend are expected to hover around 80.
