Road Closures Set for Fire Funeral

With thousands expected at the funerals for fallen Bridgeport firefighters Lt. Steven Velasquez and Michel Baik, city and state police plan multiple road closures to deal with the traffic. Contributing to the congestion will be the Gathering of the Vibes music festival, expected to bring thousands more into the city  Friday.

The funerals will be at 10 a.m. for Velasquez and 2 p.m. for Baik.

For Velasquez’s funeral at St. Augustine Cathedral on Washington Avenue, the city will close Washington Avenue from Coleman Street to James Street from 8 a.m. to noon.

State police will close Exit 47 (Park Avenue) on the Merritt Parkway from 1 to 4 p.m. during Baik's funeral at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church on Park Avenue. And Park Avenue itself will be closed from the Merritt Parkway to Eckert Street during the same period.

Other measures will be taken to reduce traffic. The city is encouraging concertgoers and those attending the funeral to take public transportation when possible. Two satellite parking lots will be set up at Steelpointe Harbor (Stratford Avenue and Pembroke Avenue), opening at 7 a.m. with shuttles to the funeral. After Velasquez's funeral, firefighters will be shuttled to the parking lot at Sacred Heart University on Park Avenue, where lunch and refreshments will be served by the American Red Cross.

For the Gathering of the Vibes, Waldemere Avenue and Atlantic Street will be closed from Iranistan Avenue to Seaside Park.
