Right Time To Demolish Old Police Station?

It finally looks like the end for the old, rundown police station in Mathews Park. It was abandoned in 2004 but never demolished, for lack of funds. It's now in the proposed budget for next year, at a $1.75 million teardown cost. At last night's meeting of the planning committee for the Common Council, David Park, chair of Norwalk's Historical Commission, spoke in favor of getting the job done. He's backed by groups representing the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion, the Center for Contemporary Prints and the Stepping Stones Museum--all of them located in Mathews Park. Still, it's a request. The budget isn't final yet.

Other budget requests at the meeting include $850,000 for the Board of Education, for technology implementation and $224,000 for Health Department building repairs. The planning commission will meet tonight at 6 p.m. to review additional budget issues.
