Ticket Problems

Cooper Hardin of Westport wasn't happy. He walked up to a Metro-North ticket terminal Friday night and found it wouldn't take his credit card. "Is that a joke?" he asked his friends.

It wasn't. Ticket machines at all Metro-North stations except Grand Central Terminal are currently not accepting credit or debit cards for ticket purchases. Metro-North expects efforts to repair the machines to continue through the weekend.

New Year's Eve was an inconvenient time for the problem, said Ellen Ornaff of Redding, who was boarding a train in Westport to head for a concert near Times Square. "Tonight it's a really bad time," said Ornaff. "I went with cash down to Manhattan. I don't want to go to the bank when I'm in the city, at Grand Central."

Thinking that maybe the terminal was out of order, Hardin and his friends tried another machine. "No bills accepted at this time," the screen said. "No cards accepted at this time."

It did take cash, though he didn't like using it. "Cash is usually going to be used for festivities," he said. "Maybe it's a scheme. Take money away from you so you won't drink as much and then they won't have to deal with it."

Metro-North is waiving its policy of charging higher fares for tickets purchased on trains.
