A 64-year-old Norwalk man was arrested Friday by Westport detectives on charges of posting an ad on Craigslist seeking sex. Robert Eastright is the second man this week arrested by Westport police for posting a sex wanted ad on the classified advertising website.
Westport police arrested 29-year-old Bridgeport resident Casey Curtiss on Tuesday, the same day Attorney General Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Craigslist, seeking confirmation that it took down the adult services section on its U.S. websites.
"Our message to Craigslist is to put people above profit," Blumenthal said at a press conference, according to The Associated Press. "Sacrifice the money if necessary. Clearly make a public promise that you are shutting down adult services and set a model for the industry in using screening and filtering technology."
According to Lt. Vincent Penna, Eastright posted an ad stating that he was willing to make a "donation" to a woman in exchange for sexual favors.
"Once contacted, the subject graphically stated to the undercover what he wanted sexually and what he was willing to pay," Penna said in a statement. "A meeting was set up and when the subject arrived with money in hand, he confirmed what he was there for to the undercover detective."
Eastright is charged with patronizing a prostitute. Curtiss, who placed an ad offering six ecstasy pills in exchange for sex, was charged with two counts of patronizing a prostitute, possession of a controlled substance and sale of a hallucinogen. He is due in court Oct. 6.
The investigations into Craigslist began after Westport police received a complaint earlier this month of a posting that involved the Westport Public Library.
"Westport Police Detectives received a complaint that there was a posting on Craigslist in the 'casual encounters' section [for] Fairfield County soliciting a female for an erotic encounter at the Westport Public Library, and that the semi-private nature of the library would be the perfect environment to perform public sex acts," Penna said in a statement.
As this poster did not carry out his fantasy, he was not arrest. He was, however, banned from the library for life.
