Rell Puts National Guard On Alert For Flooding

Driving down, yes, Water Street, Randy Fedor stalled out. He thought he could get through, but today's flood was worse than he expected. Governor Rell has put the Connecticut National Guard on a state of alert. She also directed the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security to secure 300,000 sandbags from Massachusetts. The Town of Greenwich has requested 1,500 sandbags.

Eastern Connecticut is being hammered by even more flooding that Norwalk, according to Michele DeLuca, Deputy Director of Emergency Management for the City of Norwalk, She says they have already experienced three more inches of rain, and reports of flooding are extensive.

The Rell activated 150 National Guard troops in Eastern Connecticut. The Department of Public Safety reassigned all available state troopers to help with road closures there. The Yantic River is expected to reach record flood levels.

In Norwalk, flooding reports have been few. Most are of flooded basements and stalled cars. Drivers should avoid driving through standing water on the streets. Streets to avoid included Woodward Ave., Meadow St., Water St. and the neighborhoods of Village Creek, Harborview, Seaview Park  and Shorefront Park. (Randy Fedor, whose car had to be towed, should have read this before he started out!)

Beware, tonight's high tide at fifteen minutes past midnight. It will be at least a foot higher than this afternoon's high tide.
