Police Warn Fairfield County Drivers Of Labor Day Traffic, School Buses

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – As Labor Day weekend approaches, Connecticut State Police are warning Fairfield County drivers to expect heavy traffic and to exercise caution as the summer driving season comes to a close and children prepare to walk or take buses to school.

Police estimate that the number of drivers on Connecticut roads over the Labor Day weekend will increase in New England compared to last year. State troopers will be concentrating on the enforcement of drunken driving, speeding, safety belt usage, and distracted driving laws over the weekend.

“Troopers will utilize both traditional and non-traditional patrol vehicles while searching for reckless and intoxicated drivers. Troopers will man sobriety checkpoints and targeted patrols to intercept drunk drivers,” an announcement from the State Police said.

State Police are also reminding all drivers to be especially vigilant in watching pedestrians before, during and after school hours. “The afternoon hours are particularly dangerous for walking children – over the last decade nationally, nearly one-third of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 and 7 p.m.,” police said.

It is also important – and the law – for all motorists to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights, police said. State Police also reminded drivers that the fine in Connecticut for passing a standing school bus is $465.
