Plow Man Preps for Winter's Third Big Blast

Don't be surprised if Ben Buckner tells you he would prefer bright and sunny days for the rest of winter. Buckner spent part of Monday aboard a mini-plow, clearing snow left over from Friday's storm from a sidewalk on South Avenue near the New Canaan Library. For all his efforts, Buckner knows he will be back on the same block to do it again, thanks to another winter storm preparing to blanket Fairfield County.

"It's good and bad," said Buckner, a crew chief with the New Canaan Parks Department. "But you're doing your job to keep the sidewalks clear for people. It's long hours, and you've got to keep going."

He and other town employees responsible for making streets and sidewalks passable are bracing for the third winter storm in as many weeks. The National Weather Service is tracking the storm, which has already chilled Southern states with snow and ice. The system is expected to reach the Northeast by Tuesday evening and dump another 6 to 12 inches of the white stuff on lower Fairfield County and beyond. A winter storm watch will be in effect for the county from Tuesday night until Wednesday afternoon, said weather service meteorologist John Murray. Western portions of the county may get the heaviest amounts, he said.

"The storm will be heavy at times, mostly overnight falling into Wednesday," Murray said. "This is similar to a blizzard, but the system is not as strong as the one we saw after Christmas."

Murray said the area is in an "active pattern" for heavy snow, but snowfall totals are similar to last winter. The weather service reports that 17.2 inches have fallen in Bridgeport this winter, about an inch less than what had fallen by this time last year.

Buckner, 47, can only shrug when he thinks about another major snowmaker and the extra hours of work it will mean. But he's ready to get back behind the wheel of the plow machine. "You've got to do what you got to do," he said.
