Starting at 11 a.m., Rilling will lead a short ceremony at City Hall in the building's first-floor atrium, where he will present a proclamation and Yale University professor Chrystal Feimster will look back on the impact of the Civil Rights Act a half-century later.
Feimster is a historian in the African-American studies department and the American studies program at Yale. She is a scholar of 19th- and 20th-century African-American history as her research and teaching interests bridge the fields of social and political history.
She teaches courses on racial and sexual violence, comparative social movements, war, law and civil rights. She is currently teaching a course titled “The Long Civil Rights Movement,” which covers the American civil rights movement from the 1920s through the 1980s.
The Serendipity Chorale will provide music during the ceremony.
