Mayor Richard Moccia is asking that workers telecommute, car pool or make alternative travel plans if possible. Highway traffic, in addition to rail congestion in and around Norwalk, is expected to increase, he said.
Temporary directional signs are being placed at the Interstate 95 exit ramps to direct commuters to the Maritime Garage on North Water Street near the Maritime Aquarium. That facility can handle several hundred additional commuter vehicles per day.
The Norwalk Transit District will run free a shuttle route from the Maritime Garage to the South Norwalk Train Station. These shuttles will run every 10 minutes during peak commuting hours. Other shuttles may be run to accommodate the anticipated high volume.
All regular Wheels service from the Norwalk Transit District bus service, including rail shuttles and ADA services, will operate normally this week.
If the South Norwalk Train Station garage and overflow lots fill up, commuters will be directed to the Maritime Garage.
Any commuter boarding a Wheels bus who shows a monthly Metro-North ticket for May is not required to pay a fare. Norwalk residents who commute by train are encouraged to take advantage of this option.
Additional Norwalk and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officers will placed at the South Norwalk station throughout the week to handle any crowd control issues.
In Westport, there will be no service on the G1 and G2 shuttles to the Greens Farms train station.
Free shuttle service will operate from the Greens Farms station to the Saugatuck station, but these vehicles will have a limited capacity. A continuous loop will run during peak hours.
Regular Saugatuck shuttles S1, S2, S3, and Imperial Lot Shuttle will operate.
ADA and door-to-door service in Westport will operate on a regular schedule.
