Norwalk Rep Named to FCC Committee

NORWALK, Conn. – State Rep. Chris Perone will help lead expanded broadband adoption and deployment as a member of a 15-person federal government committee.

Perone, a Democrat from Norwalk, has been named to the Federal Communication Commission's Intergovernmental Advisory Committee, according to an announcement from FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. The committee is made up of 15 officials of municipal, county, state and tribal governments, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"I am honored to be selected by Chairman Genachowski and the commission for appointment to the IAC," Perone said. "Given the importance of providing access for all Americans to telemedicine, business-to-business collaboration, e-government and distance education, being part of a group which will be making recommendations about how to facilitate these goals is something I look forward to."

The committee's principal focus in its upcoming two-year term will be the implementation of expanded broadband adoption and deployment, pursuant to the FCC's National Broadband Plan released in March 2010.

In 2007, Perone authored a bill to create the Connecticut Broadband Internet Coordinating Council, the mission of which has been to assess trends and developments in the state's efforts to develop a statewide, world-class digital/communications infrastructure.

"Improving access to the resources of high-speed digital communications is important for quality of life issues for our residents, and will have an impact on our efforts to create jobs and grow the economy in Connecticut," said House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan, D-Meriden. "Representative Perone's strong background and interest in broadband infrastructure will be an asset to the work of the FCC's Advisory Committee."
