Norwalk Police Seek Missing Mother, Baby

NORWALK, Conn. – Update, 9:35 a.m. Friday: Mother and baby have been found. The baby is in good condition.

Updated, 7:06 p.m.: A woman and her baby were reported missing Thursday morning and are being sought by Norwalk Police and Connecticut State Police. They may have returned to New Haven.

Kelley Acevedo, 33, has been staying in a New Haven drug rehabilitation facility, according to Lt. Ashley Gonzalez, commander of the Youth Bureau. Acevedo was given a pass Wednesday to appear in Norwalk Superior Court. She took her daughter, 7-month-old Emily, although Emily is technically in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. Acevedo did not return to the New Haven facility Wednesday night, and workers have not been able to contact her. "It's unusual," Gonzalez said. "My understanding is she's been cooperative until now."

Police checked places where they would expect to find Acevedo without success. She does not drive, and took the train to Norwalk from New Haven. Gonzalez did not know why Acevedo was due in court.

It appears that Acevedo headed back toward New Haven. Andrew Vazzano, an employee of Main Street Connect, parent company of The Daily Norwalk, snapped a picture of a woman who boarded a northbound Metro-North train at about 9:10 p.m. at the East Norwalk train station. Gonzalez says it is Acevedo. New Haven Police have been notified.

Vazzano has a blog, People of Metro North, and took her photo because he thought she was interesting. When he read the story about the missing woman he recognized her as the woman on the train.

Acevedo has been a Norwalk resident, Gonzalez said. Police contacted the baby's father but he hasn't heard from Acevedo. The baby stays with her mother at the rehab facility, and her care is supervised by DCF.

"Anytime we can't account for a 7-month old, we're concerned," Gonzalez said. "It is unusual for her not to have returned, so we want to locate her as soon as we can, and account for her wellbeing. We're following through everything that we can, between us and New Haven. State Police put out the alert for us. If people recognize her we're asking them to call 911 and let us know so we can confirm their wellbeing and return them to where they're supposed to be."
