Norwalk Man Charged With Choking His Mom

A 68-year-old Rowayton mother said no when her adult son asked for money Sunday. In return, the man allegedly grabbed his mother by the neck and started to choke her. She tried to kick him to get him to let go, and he threw her to the floor.

Oliver Hayes IV, 24, of 1 Rowayton Ave., was arrested Monday and charged with interference with a 911 call, assault on a victim over 60 and second-degree strangulation. Bond was set at $5,000.

Hayes' mother waited a day to call police because there is no phone in the house, according to Norwalk police. During the altercation with her son, she tried to push the lifeline button on her wrist. Hayes allegedly ripped it off. Police said the victim sustained injuries to her head and left side. She has bruises on her left shoulder, left foot and left buttocks.

Hayes told police that his mother falls often and says that is how she got the bruises. He said he asks her for money frequently and says he did not assault her.
