“With the new Resident Firewood Program, Norwalk residents will be provided an inexpensive heating fuel source, while the City of Norwalk will be reducing its cost for disposal and generating revenue from its sale,” Rilling said. “It is certainly a win-win for the city.”
Norwalk accepts and pays to dispose a great deal of hardwoods, which will be made available for purchase instead.
“I would like to thank Ken Hughes, superintendent of parks, for helping bring this idea to fruition,” said Councilman John Kydes, chairman of the Energy and Environment Task Force. “I would also like to thank the Department of Public Works and Mike Mocciae, director of Recreation and Parks. This has been a team effort and a sign of the city’s approach toward efficiency and service to the community.”
Taxpayers can obtain a firewood voucher online at www.norwalkct.org. Then they may present vouchers, along with identification and a resident pass to pick up the wood at the DPW Yard Debris Site, 15 S. Smith St., and load up the wood. Cost is $75 for 175 pieces, or approximately a half cord.
The first pickup times are from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, and Wednesday, Oct. 15. Each resident must pick up all wood purchased in one visit, and may only purchase one half cord of firewood per season.
Future pickups will be announced on the city’s website at www.norwalkct.org.
