NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk Hospital received a $10 million gift from the Harold W. McGraw Jr. Family Foundation to build a new Ambulatory Pavilion for outpatient care. Friday's donation is the largest ever in Norwalk Hospitals 120-year history.
The new Ambulatory Pavilion will include a new Cancer Center, an expanded Emergency Department, a center for Digestive Diseases and updated facilities for Ambulatory Surgery. It will involve 9,000 square feet of new construction and 40,000 square feet of renovation. The project will break ground this fall and is expected to be completed in early 2015.
The pavilion will be named in honor of Anne and Harold McGraw, who were large supporters of the hospital. Anne volunteered for many years at Norwalk Hospital. In their later years as they came to use the facilities, they both became passionate about emergency medicine. Anne died in 2002, followed by Harold in 2010.
Their children, Sue, Terry and Bob, made the gift in memory of their parents. We are privileged to be in a position to honor our parents, who meant so much to us, and to give to the hospital and give back to the community, Terry said when the gift was announced Friday afternoon.
The McGraws came to symbolize the supportive energy that our physicians and staff deserve, said Michael Carius, chairman of Emergency Medicine. Over the years, he said he spoke many times with Anne and Harold about the importance of emergency medicine. They both felt it was a vital service and were happy about the plans for the pavilion.
They were an inspiration to us all, and we will work harder than ever to honor your parents legacy, Carius said.
