Dan Caporale came home from the war. While serving as a paratrooper and Commandant of the Mahackemo Chapter of the Marine Corps, Caporale received the Silver Medal and two Purple Hearts. On Sunday, Caporale, the first elected chairman of the Norwalk Veterans Memorial Committee, joined with others to honor those who did not return from military service.
Norwalk paused to remember its fallen heroes at a service held at the Shea-McGrath Memorial at Calf Pasture Beach. Organized by Karen Lyons and the NVMC, the ceremony honored Daniel Shea and John McGrath, sons of Norwalk and recipients of the Medal of Honor, and all those who have died while serving their country.
Brien McMahon High School Junior ROTC members stood side by side with grey-haired veterans. Norwalk Police officers provided a 21-gun salute. Elected officials, including Rep. Jim Himes, State Senator Bob Duff and Mayor Richard Moccia attended along with approximately 150 others.
Veterans of the Vietnam War received special mention. They suffered the most when our government provided the least, said David Cole, a former chairman of the NVMC.
The solemn service included a ceremonial laying of a wreath and the retirement of colors by Cadet Lt. J.G. Anthony Gray. Taps, performed by Grace Holleran, left few with dry eyes.
