Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling spoke briefly for the small crowd gathered, and state Sen. Bob Duff was also on hand, as Town Clerk Rick McQuaid read a portion of the Declaration of Independence.
Erik Anderson, president of the Historical Society, read off the names of the 13 original colonies, as Duff rang the tower bell 13 times.
Refreshments were served after the ceremony to commemorate the 239th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress. On that day, the 13 American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire.
