Every year the city's employees donate food and toys to The Salvation Army, the Open Door Shelter and Person-to-Person. The items were collected in holiday gift baskets and arranged around the Christmas tree in the first floor atrium of City Hall. Mayor Harry Rilling presented members of the three organizations with the city's donations Friday.

“It’s just a little way we have of giving back to you for all the wonderful things you do for our community,” Rilling told the representatives from the nonprofits. He praised the work of all three organizations for helping out those who are in need throughout the city, whether it be through providing a place to sleep, giving them clothes or food or helping them out with energy bills and getting back on their feet.

“These are the kinds of things that really make a community wonderful, and all of you help make our community and amazing place,” Rilling said. “One thing I always say about Norwalk: the volunteerism, the caring, those are amazing things and I don’t think anybody does it better than the city of Norwalk, so I want to thank you all.”

Representative from The Salvation Army, Person-to-Person and the Open Door Shelter all expressed gratitude to Rilling and the city employees for their donations.

“It’s important to us to have the support of the town hall, of the people who live in Norwalk. It’s incredibly important because we are a community-supported organization, so thank you very much,” said Ceci Maher, executive director of Person-to-Person.
