As if the orange barrels weren't enough warning, drivers on Keeler Avenue had additional reason to turn around and go back the other way Monday afternoon. It was a splendid example of just how deep the water under the Interstate 95 overpass and what would happen if they tried to drive through the puddle.
Two cars got stuck there at about 12:30 p.m. They weren't the first victims: Two cars were reported stuck at 1:29 a.m., as heavy rain was falling, as it had been for hours. Norwalk police responded and got the vehicles towed out. They put up about eight bright orange barrels as a warning for others.
That worked fine until about 11 hours later. A private towing company pulled out one vehicle promptly the one that wasn't in as far. But then two other towing companies arrived, and then left, without removing the vehicles.
A police officer on the scene did not say why they had come and gone. Another police officer said he didn't know of any charges that could be filed against drivers who ignored the warning barrels and went into the deep puddles. "They'll be paying for it enough with their cars," he said.
According to The Weather Channel, about 1.88 inches of rain fell on Norwalk on Sunday. Weather Underground says that 2.78 inches fell Sunday on White Plains, N.Y.
