Norwalk Drivers Ticketed in Droves

NORWALK, Conn. – A motor vehicle initiative that targeted Norwalk drivers Tuesday and Wednesday resulted in 215 citations being issued by the Norwalk Police Department, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said.

"Typically during the week there would be 75 over those two days," Cotto said.

Police concentrated their efforts on New Canaan Avenue from 6 to 10 a.m. Tuesday and Strawberry Hill Road during the same time period Wednesday, she said. There were also many stops on Connecticut Avenue Tuesday evening, the incident log shows.

About 50 of the infractions were for speeding, Cotto said. Another 45 were for using a cell phone while driving. Cotto did not know how many of those cited were texting.

Many drives were cited for not using seat belts and failing to obey street signs and traffic lights, incident logs show. There were five tickets in a row Wednesday evening on Westport Avenue for window tinting.

A first offense of using a hand-held mobile device carries a $125 fine. Window tinting is $136.

"Our purpose was to ensure drivers slow down and concentrate on their driving," Cotto said. "Results show it's an ongoing problem, and the department will continue to concentrate on enforcement."
