Norwalk DMV Now Allows Appointments For Learner's Permits

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk DMV office's walk-in and wait-in-line system for obtaining teen and adult learner’s permits is a thing of the past. It will be replaced Tuesday with a streamlined customer appointment service for the office.

The Norwalk DMV office is located at 540 Main Ave. Customers can now make appointments for tests for learner's permits.

This will accompany a separate testing section within the office as both improvements respond to a demand for this service in Fairfield County, the state Department of Motor Vehicles said in a statement.

The test-by-appointment offering started a year ago as a pilot project in DMV's Cheshire office. An overwhelming majority – 97 percent – of the nearly 8,000 customers using the Cheshire system have rated it excellent.

“As we make these changes for customer convenience and to make it faster and easier to do business with the DMV, we want to thank those Fairfield County residents who wrote, called and sent e-mails suggesting this change,” DMV Commissioner Melody A. Currey said.

The new web-based appointment system allows a customer to use a cellphone, tablet, laptop or other personal computer to set up a day and time for an appointment. Norwalk office staff will also assist those coming to office to understand how the appointment system works.

To make an online appointment, customers can go to ct.gov/dmv and follow the instructions for choosing a date and time for taking the test in the new Norwalk Test Center. After entering all required information, a $59 payment must be made through a major credit card or electronic check.

The cost for using the system is the same as going to a major DMV service office. The road test will still be given at a major DMV branch office where the license will be issued.

The Norwalk DMV office is located at 540 Main Ave. Its hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 9:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays; and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays. The office is closed Sundays and Mondays.
