The heat advisory has been in effect all week. Heat index values will approach 100 due to temperatures in the mid-90s and dew points in the upper 60s on Wednesday afternoon and early evening, the weather service said. The heat wave is expected to continue through at least the rest of the workweek with no relief.
People working outdoors in the heat could suffer fatigue, sunstroke, muscle cramps and/or heat exhaustion. To reduce risks while outside, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. If someone is suffering from heat stroke, call 911.
Take precautions if you are outside, says the National Weather Service in Boston:
- Slow down and reduce strenuous activities. Reschedule strenuous work for early morning or evening.
- Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight.
- Drink plenty of water and nonalcoholic and noncarbonated beverages.
- Spend more time in air-conditioned places and stay out of the sun.
- Check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly or ill.
- Avoid protein rich meals such as meats that increase metabolic heat production and increase water loss.
- Never leave children, disabled adults or pets in parked cars -- beat the heat, check the back seats
A heat advisory is issued when the combined heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is at least 95 degrees for two consecutive days or if heat index values reach 100 to 104.
