About two hours after Republican Tom Foley conceded, Gov.-elect Dan Malloy thanked Foley for the way he conducted himself during a weeklong soap opera as the votes were counted.
"He has conducted himself well, from Tuesday night's difficulties through today's press conference," Malloy said Monday afternoon.
Foley, a Greenwich businessman, conceded at a 2 p.m. news conference in Hartford. After some polling places in Bridgeport ran out of ballots, the winner of the race was disputed. The final count showed Malloy, the former mayor of Stamford, the winner by about 5,600 votes. More 1.1 million ballots were cast in the race, the closest in more than a half century.
The Associated Press first called the race for Malloy but reversed itself before again naming Malloy the victor.
On Friday morning, Foley said he wouldn't concede until he was certain that the results were accurate and that he would consider a lawsuit to force a recount if he believed one was warranted. On Monday, he said he was satisfied with the result and with Malloy's win.
"I am happy for Connecticut that, despite irregularities ? there is no credible evidence of fraudulent voting," Foley said.
Malloy said getting the state budget under control would be his top priority.
