Metro-North Service Cuts? Not So Fast, Says Gov.

Service cuts by Metro-North? Not on her watch, says Governor Jodi Rell.

The recently announced proposals to shorten already crowded Metro-North trains and to eliminate late-night and weekend trains has met with stiff opposition.  "Gov. Rell has said 'no way' to any service cuts in Connecticut," said Jim Cameron, a Darien commuter who is chairman of the Connecticut Metro-North/Shore Line East Rail Commuter Council.  "Gov. Rell is...reminding those New York agencies that their current economic problems are of their creation, not Connecticut's."

Cameron says the MTA can't simply force changes on Connecticut commuters--without the state's consent.  Under Metro-North's operating contract, service reductions require the agreement of the State of Connecticut, which won't happen.  "Gov. Rell has told Joseph Marie, the Connecticut Department of Transportation commissioner, to block those proposed service cuts," said Cameron.
