A late-morning fire beneath a New York City railway bridge that temporarily halted service has been put out and service has returned to normal for commuters.
The transformer fire started late Monday morning under the 138th Street bridge over the Harlem River. Service on the New Haven Line, as well as the Hudson and Harlem lines, was suspended at 11:45 a.m. but restored by about 2:40 p.m. with scattered delays of up to 15 minutes. Trains approaching Manhattan and the south Bronx had been held at the nearest station. Commuters had been told to use subway service to the Bronx to get Metro-North trains.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Aaron Donovan said the cause of the fire remained unknown.
