Metro-North Halted From Norwalk To New Haven; Hourly Service Set Up

Updated 7:30 a.m.: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Metro-North service remained suspended until further notice between South Norwalk and New Haven after a train collision Friday in Bridgeport, the commuter railroad announced Saturday on its website.

Reduced hourly service will operate between South Norwalk Station and Grand Central Terminal, Metro-North said. Trains leaving South Norwalk will depart 39 minutes after the hour. Trains leaving Grand Central will depart 7 minutes after the hour.

Regular service will operate between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal. Customers were warned to expect crowded trains and to consider using the Harlem Line instead.

Also, regular service will be in effect on the New Canaan and Danbury branches. Bus service will be in effect between Waterbury and Bridgeport but with no train connections.

Yankee game day service will be in effect between Stamford and Yankees-E. 153rd Street Station.

There are four tracks in this segment of the New Haven Line, but two of those tracks are out of service for a long-term project to replace overhead catenary wires, Metro-North said. The remaining two tracks sustained extensive infrastructure damage as a result of the collision. Both the track and the overhead wire have been damaged. The train cars involved cannot be removed until the on-scene investigation is complete, and they will need to be removed by crane.

Normal service through this area is not expected to resume until a full investigation is complete, the infrastructure is fully assessed and repairs are made, Metro-North said.

For motorists, Exit 25 on Interstate 95 in Bridgeport also remained closed Saturday because of the crash.

Amtrak service continued to be suspended Saturday between New York and New Haven, Amtrak announced on its website. Limited Northeast Regional service is available between Boston and New Haven.

Amtrak service is operating as scheduled between New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., with all northbound service stopping at Penn Station in New York City. Shuttle service between New Haven and Springfield, Mass., is also operating as scheduled.
