Merkle Pushes for Term Limits

Republican Congressional candidate Rob Merkle called on an unlikely person for help Thursday, Democratic Congressman Jim Himes. According to a press release, Merkle urged Himes to support term limits for U.S. Senators and Congressmen.

"Without term limits, politicians become more interested in perpetual reelection than making hard decisions," Merkle said in the release. "They curry favor with special interest groups, and side with the Party over the People; 'buying' votes through earmarks, pork and Party loyalty instead of winning voters over with good public policy."

Merkle has said that if elected to represent the 4th District, he would not serve more than five terms. He has signed a bonded Term Limit Pledge with the Alliance of Bond Term Limits, guaranteeing to pay $500,000 to the Sentinels of Freedom if his promise is broken.

"Beyond five terms, you're furniture," Merkle told a gathering at the Wilton Library on July 8. "You need to get back to the real world."

According to the press release, Merkle's opponents for the Republican nomination, Dan Debicella and Rick Torres, will not sign a term limits pledge. The winner of the Aug. 10 primary will run against Himes in November to represent the 4th District, which covers most of Fairfield County.

Sentinels of Freedom, located in Pinehurst, N.C., assists servicemen and women who receive brain trauma and other injuries in combat to transition back into civilian life.
