McMahon Slams GOP Challengers

The fight card is set. Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon will take on Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in the race for Christopher Dodd’s U.S. Senate seat. As of 10:30 p.m., McMahon held 49 percent of the Republican vote with 50 percent of the precincts reporting. Former senator Rob Simmons of Southington managed 29 percent, while Weston’s Peter Schiff came in third with 22 percent.

“I’m honored to have earned my party’s nomination, and I am determined to lead our party to victory in November,” McMahon said. She attributed her win to voters’ feelings about the economy. In her campaign, she stressed her plans to fight government spending and bring jobs to Connecticut, despite claims made in campaign ads for Schiff that claim she supported government bailouts for failing banks.

“This election is about jobs. The American Dream is threatened, but Washington continues its reckless spending, massive debt, and tax increases,” she said. “Washington is suffocating small businesses and killing jobs.”

Another issue brought up by her opponents was her experience, an issue that will continue to come up in the fall campaign. McMahon has never held elected office. In the general election, she’ll face Blumenthal, who has won five terms as attorney general since 1990. According to polls released Aug. 4 by Quinnipiac University, McMahon trailed Blumenthal 50-40.
