Norwalk resident Maria Verde Mattera died Sunday in Norwalk Hospital. She was 97 years old.
Mattera was born in Ischia, Italy, and enjoyed traveling there with her family. The 47-year Norwalk resident loved gardening, sewing and going to the casino. Mattera is survived by her six children: Clorinda Iacono and her husband, Raffaele; Giovanni B. Mattera; Luigi Mattera and his wife, Mary Buono; Lorenzo Mattera and his wife, Betty Giuliano; Salvatore Mattera and his wife, Rose Conte, and Anna Mattera and her husband, Pietro. Maria was the grandmother of 19 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 5 East Wall St. Her funeral will begin at 9:15 a.m. Thursday in the home's parlor. The funeral cortege will proceed to St. Matthew R.C. Church, located at 216 Scribner Ave., where a Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Sunil Perreira will officiate. Entombment will follow in St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
