HARTFORD, Conn. Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy has been named chairman of a national governors' committee that oversees issues impacting energy, the environment, agriculture and natural resources.
Malloy was appointed to lead the National Governors' Association's Natural Resources Committee by the group's chairman, Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, and its vice chairman, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell.
Members of the panel ensure that governors' views are represented in shaping federal policy.
Malloy, a Democrat from Stamford, said he welcomes the one-year chairmanship.
"While the cost of energy continues to rise straining family budgets and putting our fragile economic recovery in jeopardy we must do more to explore different avenues and move toward a clean, green energy future," he said in a statement.
"As a nation, we must continue to advance the clean energy technologies that are the future of job growth and economic expansion," he said. "I am honored to chair the (committee) and work toward balancing the needs of our economy with the stewardship of our land and resources."
South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard will serve as vice chairman.
Founded in 1908, the National Governor's Association is the collective voice of the nation's governors and one of Washington, D.C.'s public policy organizations. Its members include the governors of the 50 states, three territories and two commonwealths.
