Democrat Dan Malloy is the next governor of Connecticut, according to official numbers released Friday evening by Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz. But Republican Tom Foley still has not given up his fight.
The statewide tally was 566,498 votes for Malloy and 560,861 votes for Foley, a statement from Bysiewicz's office said. The difference of 5,637 votes is too big to force an automatic statewide recount. The threshold for that is 2,000 votes, Av Harris, spokesman for the secretary of the state's office, said at the Capitol.
The Bridgeport count was 17,973 votes for Malloy, the former Stamford mayor, to 4,099 for Foley, a Greenwich businessman.
On Friday morning, Foley said he wouldn't concede until he's certain that the results were accurate and that he would consider a lawsuit to force a recount if he believes one is warranted.
"It may well take a recount to get an accurate count," he said. "There may well be plenty of basis for a recount."
"We are being laughed at. ... I've gotten calls internationally," Foley, a former ambassador to Ireland, said. "I don't want the situation where a call is made here and it's the wrong one. That would be even worse."
On Friday afternoon, Malloy said, "We're as anxious as everyone else is to get the final numbers. We're also continuing our intensive efforts to create an administration that is up and running, and ready for the challenges awaiting us when we take office on Jan. 5."
Bysiewicz's office has until Nov. 25 to give final certification to the results. That allows time to do recounts or resolve any problems in any race.
