Malloy Declares State of Emergency

Heavy snowfall on top of leaf-covered trees caused widespread damage and power outages throughout Connecticut on Saturday, according to the governor's office. For that reason, a state of emergency was declared at 5:30 p.m.

"Residents should stay off the roads right now, let the road crews get out there and get things cleaned up," said Gov. Dannel Malloy, according to a statement. "Streets are dangerous, power lines are down and we are seeing extensive tree damage with more to come as high winds enter the state. We will begin the restoration and recovery phase as soon as possible, but right now I urge Connecticut residents to stay home and stay safe."

The declaration provides Malloy with additional emergency powers to use in response to the storm.

The governor also warned residents who were without power or who lose power overnight that they may be in the dark "for a prolonged period."

Also Saturday, Malloy issued a ban of all non-emergency vehicles on the Wilbur Cross/Merritt Parkways. Bus service along the Danbury and Waterbury train lines had been suspended, and Metro-North Railroad was operating with delays. Service was suspended on the New Canaan branch.

The governor will brief the media at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the State Armory in Hartford.
