Malloy Calls Special Session on Jobs

HARTFORD, Conn. – Fresh off his meeting this week with Fairfield County business leaders in Stamford that highlighted ways to create jobs, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has called for a special session of the General Assembly to enact legislation to make the state “an international center for bioscience research.”

Malloy on Thursday filed a proclamation with the Secretary of the State's office to call the legislature into a special session on Wednesday, Oct 26, at 11 a.m. to enact legislation that he says, “improves job creation, promotes economic growth, creates a better business climate, develops a sustainable and competitive workforce, and ensures that Connecticut becomes an international center for bioscience research.”

The governor began a jobs tour in June and has made over 70 stops across the state seeking ways to create jobs. He said he will release a bipartisan package to help put ideas from the tour in place, and is willing to take parts out to win bipartisan backing. The package is tentatively scheduled to be released next week, Malloy said.

In his proclamation, Malloy states that “a unique opportunity has presented itself in the form of an innovative collaboration between Jackson Laboratory, the state of Connecticut, the University of Connecticut and Yale University, that will transform Connecticut into an international center for bioscience research.”

Malloy states in the proclamation that special legislation is needed because “Connecticut, along with the rest of the nation, is in the midst of the most significant economic downturn since the Great Depression.

“Whereas, the state is currently experiencing an unemployment rate of 9.1 percent, the problems faced by our state concerning job creation and economic development cut across socio-economic, political and demographic boundaries, it is incumbent on the government, on behalf of the people of the state of Connecticut, to craft practical solutions” to spur job growth and economic development.
