Malloy Ahead; Foley Still Fighting

The soap opera that is the Connecticut race for governor appeared near a conclusion on Friday with Democrat Dan Malloy poised to win. But Republican Tom Foley wasn't ready to back down.

The latest drama started early in the morning when Bridgeport Mayor Bill Fitch announced that Malloy had won the city's vote by a large enough margin to win the governorship. The secretary of the state still needs to make an official announcement.

Within hours, Foley held a press conference with no suggestion that he would concede.

"Connecticut citizens deserve to know with confidence what the voters decided on Tuesday

Connecticut deserves better, Connecticut deserves to know what the actual votes were," Foley said. "It may well take a recount to get an accurate count."

On Wednesday, the secretary of the state named Malloy, the former Stamford mayor, as the winner after a contentious night at the polls. Foley, a businessman who lives in Greenwich, vowed to contest the results. Then Malloy seized the moment and vowed to move ahead.

"We're transitioning," Malloy said in Hartford as he espoused confidence that his victory would stand. But Foley has a different result in mind. "I am not conceding," Foley said during a news conference Wednesday afternoon at his Stamford campaign office.

Foley said he plans to sit down with Secretary of the State Susan Bysciewicz and go over the numbers of votes cast in Tuesday's election. Bysciewicz had called the election for Malloy.
