NORWALK, Conn. A man with a machete and another with a yard rake allegedly caused mayhem in South Norwalk as Saturday turned into Sunday before getting into an altercation with two brothers, one of whom said he had been assaulted by the pair.
Oscar Cortes, 29, of 177 S. Main St., was arrested and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, breach of peace and conspiracy. Bond was set $10,000. Luca Hernandez-Rivas, 30, also of 177 S. Main St., was charged with assault, breach of peace and conspiracy. His bond was set at $1,000.
Police say Cortes and Hernandez-Rivas were arguing at South Main and Belle Avenue. They got into a slight scuffle and then ran off, falling as they did so. Later, they came back to throw trash cans and garbage in the street and yards. Cortes had a machete and was dragging it and scraping it along a fence. Hernandez-Rivas had a yard rake.
A 25-year-old man went outside to walk his dog and returned, telling his brother that he had been hit in the face with a rock. The brothers went outside and a verbal argument ensued. One of them men threw a punch at one of the brothers, police said.
Police say the machete had an 11-inch cutting surface. Both brothers declined medical treatment.

Police say they found a machete in the trunk of a man who was stopped on a motor vehicle violation Sunday evening. Charles Seaman, 53, of Stamford, was arrested and charged with weapons in a motor vehicle. Bond was set at $2,000. He was also given citations for failure to renew registration, operating with a registration/license revoked and no insurance.
An officer who had a license plate reader in his patrol car was alerted to Seaman's presence at 7:45 p.m. on Richards Avenue, because the license plate had expired in 2009. The blade of the machete found in the trunk was 2 feet long, and it was rusted on the blunt side. Seaman told the officer that he used the machete for work, but the officer learned that he was an auto mechanic.
