Local Polling Places Picked for Audit

Six local polling places in lower Fairfield County have been selected for a state audit of the Nov. 2 general election. The audit will consist of a hand count of results compared with the machine count to check the accuracy of the results.

Because of the closeness of the results for governor, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz announced Monday that results would be audited in 86 polling places in the state. She added that two other offices, selected at random, would be audited in addition to the results for governor.

"Auditing election results isn't just a good idea, it's absolutely essential in order to guarantee the integrity of our elections," Bysiewicz sad in a statement. "Record numbers of Connecticut residents cast ballots on Nov. 2, and we don't just take the machines' word for it."

Under state audit laws, 10 percent of all polling places must be audited by hand, meaning a manual tabulation of the paper ballots cast and counted by each voting machine in the randomly selected polling locations. Bysiewicz said she was confident by the end of the audit the numbers would match. Audits can begin no sooner than Wednesday, Nov. 17, and must be completed by Monday, Nov. 22.

The local poll audit locations include:

• Greenwich North Mianus School District 12

• Wilton Driscoll School District 2

• Fairfield Dwight School District 3

• Norwalk Kendall School Voting District A3 District 140

• Greenwich Town Hall District 2

• Fairfield Osborn School 133 District 4
