Local Burbs Top Spending List

It makes you want to give up clipping the Sunday supermarket coupons!  New Canaan and Darien residents' average restaurant spending in 2009 was higher than anywhere else in the country, coming in at more than $1,000 a month, according to Bundle.com, a website that tracks national spending. Over the year, according to Bundle, Darienites' 2009 restaurant tabs averaged $13,428.  Average 2009 household overall spending for New Canaan and Darien were respectively, $145,883 & $144,758, giving them, the number two and three positions on Bundle's "Top 25 Spending Suburbs" list. (First place honors go to Kenilworth Illinois where the average was over $150,000.)

Bundle singled out some other Fairfield County towns, including Westport, for top of the list spending. Westport ranked number six, with average 2009 spending coming in at $137,754. According to Bundle, Westport households were the third-highest spenders on phone-related expenses, averaging $2,867 in 2009. Bundle gave Greenwich the number nine slot, with average yearly spending of $133,330. Bundle reports, Greenwich was the highest-spending suburb for healthcare on the list, with an average $7,447 paid out per household in 2009. Southport ranked number 14, with $108,695 average spending in 2009 and of that, personal care spending per household came in at $4,428, the highest tracked. Personal Care includes cosmetics, dry cleaning, laundry, health clubs, spas and salons.

Bundle's breakdown by state revealed that  Connecticut residents were also the top of the national spending heap with its averages for insurance ($6,393), clothes ($2,435), dining out ($4,336), and healthcare ($1,369).
