FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Greenwich resident and former wrestling CEO Linda McMahon is throwing her hat in the ring for a second bid for the U.S. Senate, she announced Tuesday.
McMahon will seek the seat to be vacated next year by Sen. Joseph Lieberman. She made the announcement at a manufacturing company in Southington, where she spoke of discontent over the economy.
We were looking back two years ago to a terrible recession; now were looking ahead to the prospect of another. In two years, weve seen a massive government stimulus fail, at a cost of nearly a trillion dollars. Weve gone from companies too big to fail to a government that well spends way too much, said McMahon in comments posted on her website.
It is clear to most everyone now, regardless of what political party you belong to, that were going down the wrong economic track, and wed better get off in a hurry.
McMahon and her husband, Vince McMahon, created Stamford-based media giant World Wresting Entertainment. She stepped down as CEO in 2009 to run for the Senate, losing to then-Attorney General Richard Blumenthal by more than a 10 percentage points. She spent $50 million of her own money on the race.
McMahon will face off in the Republican primary with Hartford attorney Brian K. Hill; former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, who has said he plans to officially announce his candidacy next month, and possibly Vernon Mayor Jason McCoy.
Democrats, including former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy and state Rep. William Tong, have already put in bids for their partys endorsement.
A recent Quinnipiac University poll showed McMahon would defeat Shays in a primary by a 15 percent margin, 50 percent to 35 percent. However, the survey also found McMahon would lose to Bysiewicz and Murphy in a general election.
