Irene Knocks Out Power to More Than 700K in State

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – [UPDATED 12:30 p.m.] The rains of Tropical Strom Irene may have subsided, but more than 700,000 power outages were reported across the state, Gov. Dannel Malloy said during a noon news conference. More outages are likely as high winds are expected to continue throughout the afternoon, Malloy said.

The Merritt and Wilbur Cross Parkways are no longer closed, but Malloy strongly advised people not to go out on the roadways. At 10:45 a.m., a tractor-trailer ban was lifted from the interstates.

About 2,000 utility poles have been damaged and hundreds of cell phone towers are not working properly. Malloy recommended people text instead of placing calls, if possible.

Extensive damage has been found on the New Canaan Branch of Metro-North Railroad. The full extent of the damage is not yet known, but it was believed to be due to trees that have fallen onto the overhead wires, Malloy said.

Connecticut Light & Power is working with double the number of crews. Malloy said the power company is working to bring in extra crews from Colorado.
