Words With Friends. If you think the expression means a polite disagreement between two acquaintances, then you do not own or operate an iPhone or iPad. And you're definitely not Alec Baldwin.
The downloadable app, a virtual, Scrabble-like (the board is slightly different), word game played between two iPhone/iPad users at a time, has caught on since it was first introduced in 2009. That year it had approximately one million users, but as of this year Words With Friends has been downloaded some 10 million times.
It is fun and easy to use. But it can also be addictive. Just ask Baldwin. The 30 Rock star was asked to leave an American Airlines flight late at Los Angeles Airport Tuesday evening, after a flight attendant asked to stop playing the game on his iPad.
So annoyed was the actor with the flight attendant that he issued a series of angry tweets. Among them: United shud hav app onboard where u can play WWF w other passengers. American shud have app where u read the new testament w flt attendants.
Words With Friends took the free publicity in stride and issued their statement of support in a manner unique to their platform. On its own twitter account, the company issued the following statement: Hey @AmericanAir, dont ground @AlecBaldwin for playing. A.B.S.U.R.D. is worth *at least* 11 points in @WordsWFriends.
According to his spokesperson, Baldwin is such a big fan of the game that he was willing to leave a plane for it.
American Airlines refused to make an official comment on the story, citing customer privacy, but they did respond to Baldwin. The airline tweeted: "@AlecBaldwin Mr. Baldwin, we are looking into this. Please DM us contact information."
Addictive? Maybe so, but Words With Friends sure helps pass the time when your plane is stuck at the gate.
